On Saturday, October 28, 2006, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., the Accokeek Foundation will launch its new foodways program at the National Colonial Farm. The program will feature traditional colonial food preparation methods such as open hearth cooking and beehive baking. Costumed presenters will demonstrate preparation of seasonal squash and vegetables, chicken, and wheat bread. The cooking will be authentic for the time period and representative of food preparation for "middling" sort tobacco growing families of the Tidewater area.
Reed Hellman is a freelance writer and the editor of Recreation News, the largest monthly travel and leisure newspaper in the mid-Atlantic said, "The National Colonial Farm's foodways program offers a rare opportunity for food lovers to see a working beehive oven and to experiment with traditional recipes and cooking methods."
This event is open to the public. There is a $2 general admission fee.
Volunteers are welcome. If you have an interest in food and colonial-style cooking, we will provide training at the National Colonial Farm. Please call Julie Nguyen at 301-283-2113, extension 20, for additional information.
