The Accokeek Foundation is offering a series of basket making workshops, taught by award-winning local artisan, and WETA Hometown Hero, Byron Williams. The baskets will be simple but will provide techniques that will enable participants to work in the medium and evolve their own styles. Frequently, accomplished basket makers are unfamiliar with the rib techniques. Byron Williams is a local artist renowned for his unique, decorative, and functional baskets and gourds using a variety of traditional yet innovative techniques. Byron has been making baskets for more than 30 years and is a regular participant in juried shows.

The first class (Rib Basket) and third class (Wild Vine Basket) will result in egg baskets, but discussions will cover other shapes, sizes, and forms of rib basket.

The second class (Bark Basket) will be a departure from the rib basket and will use tulip poplar bark to make a traditional "bark berry basket." History and variations of the bark berry basket will be discussed.

Rib Basket Class, Sunday, March 4 from 12-4:30pm

Bark Basket Class, Sunday, May 6 from 12-4:30pm
