Colonial Foodways Schedule Announced

The Accokeek Foundation is pleased to announce this year's Colonial Foodways Schedule. Visitors are invited to visit the 3rd Saturday of each month for different demonstrations of colonial foods, preparation and cooking tools, representative of "middling" sort tobacco growing families. Costumed interpreters will be talking about and demonstrating the following:

*April 21: Baking breads, beans, and other seasonal foods, use of Bee Hive Oven

**Special Event, May 12, Children's Day: Beating biscuits

*May 19: Cookies, tarts and things sweet

*June 16: Open Hearth cooking demonstration

*July 21: Fruit desserts, preservation, drying, and leathers

*August 18: Culinary, medicinal, dyes, and other uses of herbs

*September 15: Bee Hive Oven, Dutch Oven and Frying Pan demonstration

** Special Event: October 6, Colonial Day: Smoking of ham and fish, making beef or venison jerky, roasting/smoking ears of corn

*October 20: Salting and pickling foods for winter

*November 17: Meat and fish preservation for winter, use of smoke house and rack set up over open fire

**Special Event, December 8, Winter's Eve: Festive desserts

Demonstrations are rain or shine. Regular Admission for adults is $2, children $0.50. Special events have different admission fees. Members are free. Please visit the Events section of the website for more information, or call 301.283.2113 to inquire.
