The Accokeek Foundation has field trip dates available for the 2007-2008 school year. Located just 12 miles south of Washington, DC, on the shores of the Potomac River, the Accokeek Foundation offers many opportunities for students to experience Colonial History and learn how we are all connected to the environment. Whether visiting the Foundation's National Colonial Farm, The Robert Ware Strauss Ecosystem Farm, and natural areas within the park, students gain an awareness of how the land shapes people, and people shape the land, over time.
There are three programs offered Monday through Friday, from now through June 13th:
The Life of the Colonial Child program is offered to 1st through 3rd grade students. Centered on the daily life of an 18th century farm child, students experience the chores, food, clothing and playtime of 200 years ago on a middle class tobacco farm, while learning how important the local environment was and is used to their everyday needs.
The Tidewater's Living History program is offered to 4th through 8th grade students, and explores the development of Maryland, Virginia and the District of Columbia. Students discuss reasons for emigration, tobacco as an economic base and how nature was a primary shaper of colonial life. Students learn how actions and decisions made by people in the past have shaped the states that we know today.
The Land and History program is offered to 4th through 12th grade students, and explores how humans view and use the natural resources around them. While visiting the colonial farm, students see how earlier cultures have left their legacies on the land. The visit to the Ecosystem Farm shows how our decisions will affect future generations. By studying how the land has been used in the past, we can make wiser choices for the present and future.
These innovative programs meet content standards for school curriculum development in both Maryland and Virginia. Social studies and environmental education in the classroom are supplemented, and programs include pre- and post-trip preparation and activities. We request $3.50 per child.
