School Tour: Cultivating Our Roots
Service Description
What plants come to mind when you think about a garden? Squash, corn, or okra? What about sunflowers, lavender, or yellow iris? Some of these plants are native to our area, some are non-native, and some are invasive. All of these have been cultivated by people, and all have an impact on us today. In this program, students will learn what the terms “native,” “non-native,” and “invasive” really mean, and why they matter. They will take time to connect to nature and observe the interactions between various members of our ecosystem. Students will learn what effects the actions of gardeners of years past continue to have on our world, and how we can have a better relationship with our environment. Through rediscovering our place in nature, students will not only learn environmental literacy, social studies, and science, they will also get in touch with the fundamentals of Social Emotional Learning.
